Will you physically work in Portland? Better to live in Vancouver WA if you can. No need to pay 10% state taxes and constantly be concerned about your family’s safety. If you need to be in Oregon, aim for Beaverton. Lived in Portland and moved out after too many shootings/rampant crime/stepping in human feces etc.
All that said, I do enjoy visiting Portland during weekends.
I lived on the East side, 62nd and Romana. Was it ratchet? Sure - but it’s still a fun time and there are lots and lots of families circa 2020-2021. I left and moved to the East side however as it WAS getting worse.
From what I’ve heard, it’s all getting cleaned up and with the changes being made at the local gov’t level should continue to improve.
Moved from NYC to PDX and find it so much cheaper. We used to live in the Pearl district but it got tough during COVID so moved east side and love it. Not into the suburbs so we are close in NE. There are issues with houseless and mentally ill people in every city and it is bad here but the City is trying and new governor is committed to cleaning it up. I find it far cheaper than SF or NYC. Good lifestyle and easy access to coast or mountains.
To add to this, it’s also much slower pace than any of the cities mentioned and therefore has a more relaxed feel.
Hi, I’m a Portland native, one of the endangered species here. I would never recommend anyone move up here. $90k is barely surviving. Stay in SF
Lol SF is so so so much more expensive. I grew up in Portland and moved back a few years ago specifically because SF was way too expensive (I lived there for many years).
Depends on what part of Portland. I lived in SE Portland and my partner and I paid 1250 total for a 2 bedroom apartment. now we live in a 3bd townhouse and pay $2500. I make 110K and some months it still feels tight but that is mostly because of debts I am paying off. Probably a lot more affordable than Cali tho?
Don’t get it wrong if you want a studio IN downtown it’s still gonna run you that 1700+
The prices skyrocketed for about a year but seems like things are coming back to equilibrium or houses couldn’t find renters for their extreme prices. Seen a few houses in the Beaverton area for about 2200-2500 for a 3bd.
I had just moved from SE off 26th street rent went from 1450 to 1600 for a tiny 2 bd apt 900sqft so we got out
I live in SE Portland (my personal favorite part of Portland- you don’t have to pay for parking and it’s very safe in terms of crime and homelessness) in a one bed apartment very centrally located and pay around 2k a month for rent. I have a storage unit right across the street for my bikes, snowboards, extra gear for another $80 a month, and ults are a flat rate 50 a month for water/sewer and garbage. Electricity is like 35 a month, wifi is 80 for 1 gb speed, etc etc.
You can live very nicely for 3k a month which is well within your budget at 90k a year.
Check out ladds addition area, 12th and hawthrone & and if you wanted to live even cheaper you could move to north Portland on the west side and get a 2bd 2 bath for about 2k a month
Ladds addition is nice, hard to find things that open up there. Most of the affordable “SE” locations are affordable for a reason.
I lived off 26th and the homeless were at most of the parks
Portland is feeling great now!
We just moved from SF to Portland. It’s so much cheaper.
Portland is cheaper. I live in NE (by Williams). It’s great.
If you can make it in San Fran, you'll be fine in Portland. The cost of living is significantly better in Portland.
COL is getting pretty comparable to SF. Besides the job, why are you moving?
Not even remotely close to SF COL.
Portland rent is probably a little more favorable when comparing it to that of the cost of living in SF, but it's prolly best to go right outside town. I have a friend who lives in Oregon City who says the commute is pretty easy and tolerable.
Is your friend apart of the reason why traffic keeps getting worst ? 😜
It will be cheaper, though to buy a house/ condo in a neighborhood that is decent you will be looking around 600k up in the burbs. To rent, you are golden, there are tons of places. This is just my opinion West side is suburbs, tech, businesses and new construction, very modern, and within walking distance to shopping and chain restaurants. Personally, I like the East side, the restaurants, music, artists, and on the Max Line…If you’re commuting to the west side though the traffic can be a nightmare most days. I’ve done it for yrs. Never had a problem with crime, thankfully. Maybe pick something in the middle of the two Lake Oswego or Sellwood..both have Apts/Condos. up and great restaurants. Best of luck!
Of course, if you can afford it, LO + Sellwood would be my ideal
Where will your kid live? I just re-read that part of the post. How old is the kid? (Just to determine if things like school advice are relevant to share. In general, school situation in PDX more relaxed than SF.)
It can get pricey the closer you are to the city. I moved here from LA some time ago and thought the cost would be less, it wasn’t…and it’s only gotten worse…😔
90k is a fine salary to live in Portland but it is getting expensive here. When I rented I was able to find affordable housing fairly easily. I rented a two bedroom condo in SW (Hillsdale) for $1600 and made around that salary before buying a home in SE. If it's a position where you can grow I say take it!
I live in a high rise in Pearl, 1 bedroom plus den, garage parking and valet around $2k a month.
Everyone on this thread acting like Portland same cost as pdx, but this type of place in SF would be $4K+.
Still crazy expensive! Definitely at San Francisco Bay Area levels of crazy. My girlfriend and I were trying to relocate there and only after numerous bidding wars did we find anything - and it was still over our budget.
31 with 3 living on 105. Wife stays home. You’ll be fine. It’s tight but all of our needs are met.
Have you considered coming to Portland and checking out the neighborhoods that you could afford? Things are absolutely cheaper here but the relative salaries are also lower from what I’ve observed. I personally am around that salary range and it would be a pretty big stretch for me to live on my own in any area I would want to around portland. When you factor in retirement savings, future vehicles, and saving for a home it’s a little tougher to justify the cost of living here on that salary.
You absolutely can do it but you may want to see if it’s actually something you want to do in an area you can afford… or consider getting roommates.
I live in SW Portland and really like the location. I’m about 20-30 minutes from major downtown Portland attractions, close to several hospitals, and lots of shopping options. Plus it’s pretty quiet.
I agree with all the comments above. Its definitely doable but it depends on where you will be living.
