the northern beaches in general are a fine place to live. access to the CBD is poor because there isn't a train line and you have to drive through a bottleneck to get to the city - that's why people in Sydney call the northern beaches "the insular peninsula". it's a safe area of Sydney, but safety is in the eye of the beholder and in my opinion Sydney is already a very safe city and Australia is already a very safe country, so in my view even the rougher Sydney suburbs are safe.
but also boooooo northern beaches, buncha snobs! us salt-of-the-earth actuaries and management consultants live in the hills district and eastern suburbs, maybe lower north shore if we're pushing it!
Balgowlah is a lovely place to live. It’s a harbour suburb, great views of the city, lots of hiking, cycle trails, excellent schools, nice shops, cafes and restaurants. It is an expensive suburb and is very safe. Balgowlah can be quite suburban in pockets though. I’d recommend living in the next suburb Manly, if you can afford it. Manly is cosmopolitan and has harbour beaches and surf beaches. Moreover Manly has a direct ferry service downtown, leaving every 15mins. The fast ferry takes about 15-20mins, and has the most spectacular views you’ll ever see on a commuter service in the world. If you live in Balgowlah, you’re 5 mins drive away from Manly and there is an express bus service downtown, with a dedicated bus lane which takes about 30-40mins in the worst traffic. Driving to the city is a hassle, but Balgowlah is geographically very close to the city so driving downtown takes 20-40mins even in the worst traffic. My advice is to try and get a place in Manly, if you can’t do that then Fairlight and Balgowlah are great suburbs too.
I’ll take your word for it! Grew up just off military road and traffic can be brutal
Ps- the hills district is a boring area, unless all you want to do is go to church and drive everywhere. The Hills is 30miles from Downtown and I’d frankly suggest living in Ohio instead. It’s also where Hillsong comes from, it’s very right wing, boring, christian, uncreative, very suburban, meaning that you must drive everywhere. Most importantly, it’s 60mins drive to the closest beach. This defeats the purpose of living in Sydney. lol
Couldn’t agree more, I definitely want to be living somewhere with close access to the beach
