Pitch the idea your GCD will love and then watch as he/ she wisely waters it down so your shitty client will buy it.
The correct answer is: show the CD a "big idea" that "isnt advertising," then "make it bigger," then go through a few rounds before Account people and Strategists peck at it. That way your CD feels like you get it.
Then present it to the client and have them say "thanks for the thinking" as they request the banner ad that was the original assignment. That way the client feels like you get it.
It sounds like you've discovered how much time gets wasted between those two things.
Don't bring it up again. That's being negative!
Always pitch the bigger idea. It’s easier to scale back. Use your GCD as a guide. This is a time for you to be creative and not worry too much about limitations.
I think in the long run it’s better to pitch GCD-wowing ideas. Produced work is good, but ultimately it’s the GCDs you’re trying to please. Why can’t you pitch both though?
