Is everyone trying to be a LinkedIn influencer now? I was checking through LI this morning and tbh it looks like people who would have tried to make a podcast a few years ago are now trying to be "thought leaders" there. My generation (millennial) is getting cringier by the day.

I hate the term influencers lol . It’s more like a buttered up term for the word narcissist / attention seeker

likefunny

When I tell you I hate LinkedIn… it has become yet another social media site we didn’t really need. I’d deactivate my account if every employer and their mother weren’t using it for hiring.

A lot of them think posting such garbage will make it easier for them get a job or it constitutes networking. Some of the times I feel sympathetic towards some of the posts, other times I just find it questionable like the barrage of selfies that seem better suited for Instagram.

The real move is staying active so you don't get buried by the ATS. If you’re posting, you’re staying at the top of recruiter search results. Most people wait until they’re laid off to fix their profile, but by then they’re already "cold leads."

It’s basic Sales 101: recruiters want the easiest win, so they prioritize "warm" active users first. It’s the difference between you chasing recruiters and recruiters chasing you.

Back in my younger days (the 80s and 90s), a 'thought leader' was also known as a cult leader.

I too have LI fatigue 🤣

I’m trying a different strategy of posting a weekly, well-researched opinion column that isn’t always job related. Sometimes it’ll poke fun at LinkedIn influencing, sometimes commentary on world events etc. At least it won’t be the exact same flavour of AI-assisted cringe as other people are churning out.

Most people don't realize that staying active on LinkedIn essentially pings the ATS algorithms. It signals that your profile is current, making you a primary target for recruiters. Building that visibility while you're still employed is a survival tactic for this market—by the time you're laid off, you want to already be at the top of their solicitation list.

I’d like to address some counterpoints on this topic from a second or third degree connection point of view. One major factor that seems to be missing is that too many people simply demand an employee’s internal reference to a job posting without first establishing a level of trust. The problem with this approach is that it’s all upside for the job seeker and huge political risk to the employee giving the internal reference.

How do I know that your personality isn’t going to cause friction?
How do I know your skills are up to par?
How do I know that you aren’t going to pack up and leave in 6 months so I’m left holding the bag?

If I see your quality of work, how you handle objections and deal with people, I would probably recommend you - even if I haven’t met you personally. And I have recommended established players in the past. But if you’re a pushy stranger, there’s no way I’m going to risk my career for you.

That’s why I support the professional branding on various social media channels like LinkedIn because it’s a very practical and affordable way for us introverts to get noticed. People love to play up excuses like - there’s nothing you can do because it’s an “old boy club”. Well there’s an alternate way to get noticed. And it’s free. So what’s your excuse now?

Only millennials do this? Lol

I think everyone does this. We don't see a future in this corporate economy so why not?

Worst generation ever? Seriously? You blame them? Once Boomers retire, and millennials take over, We will do what the boomers could not. Take care of the next generation so they can afford homes, jobs, have families, but with no future to look forward too what do you expect them to do. Work hard while layoffs are rampant, Wages are stagnant, Homes are unaffordable, Just retire and move to Florida, let us fix what you could not. Boomers suck!!!

Yeah, LinkedIn is the new goldrush in social media

Guilty, I'm doing it. I hate it. But I want bigger engagement because I'm looking for a job, so there you go. Sorrynotsorry

You don’t need to do all that to stay active to get a job! Updating your profile details does and actually using the job search button to search does too, keep playing with keywords in the job search (like GRC analyst, engineer, professional, etc.. Lastly use the notification feature to notify you based on job titles or keywords.

React quickly when you get those notifications. Posting only boosts your engagements.

If you are into cybersecurity, the hiring season is last 3 months of the year and the 1st 3 months of the new year.

This is coming from someone who has been doing this for 4 years. Helps move up the ladder every 1.5 to 2.5 years!
