Is it out of line to ask plainly what your track to partnership is? I was hired at my firm 3 years ago when I was in my 9th year of practice. I was promised a partnership track and strong upward trajectory. At my review in December I got massively positive feedback and a HUGE raise. But I still somehow have a hard time getting assigned decent work and likewise I feel like I get drastically less involvement from partners than other associates get (no I’m not antisocial). (continued) At my review I also delicately brought up the topic and the person who conducts those reviews said he would discuss it with management to see what that looks like and get back to me. But I haven’t heard anything. I followed up again a couple weeks ago and didn’t get an answer. I really have no idea how to read all these mixed signals. I don’t how to tell them that if they’re not going to take my advancement seriously and start staffing me on real work, that I cannot be strung along and I cannot invest any more time at the firm

How no you’re not out of line.I think it’d be irresponsible for you not to ask. This is your career you’re talking about. Your employer should be open to this discussion.

I’ve done the exact same thing with the same results. Curious as to what others have to say. At my spot I think the issue is that we have more partners than associates and they don’t want to further dilute their equity, but they pay us well enough to not leave and start over.

As a partner, there are really just a few things that are most important to getting everyone to vote you in. 1. Can you do good work from start to finish with little to no oversight? 2. Can you bring in new business? or 3. Can you expand existing business? And 4. Can you draw money? If you can honestly answer yes to all of those then you are ready to be a partner and are indispensable to the business. If they aren’t ready to make you partner, take your business and go elsewhere.

This sounds like my situation much earlier in my career. The firm continued to string me along for years and I was foolish enough to play along, till they showed me the door. I landed on my feet but underwent years of angst for no good reason.

We have motion sensor lights in my office and the sensor is far from my desk. Consequently, if I'm on a long WebEx, the lights go out and it's embarrassing. The building won't change the sensor. Anyone find a solution for this (aside from standing up and moving, which would be very awkward)? I can't rearrange my office.
