Any PgM level 4 or 5 here?
Im currently working at a Data Center, I’m Currently L3 and I’m wanting to see other options within Google. The problem is, as much as I reach out to Hiring managers and other Googlers in other ladders for information on what they do to get a better idea of other roles, I get no response. What’s a good way of networking to other googlers in other ladders. I feel Data Centers are so looked down upon and so out of touch with the rest of Google

One of my close friends has: Ivy undergrad, Ivy MBA (somewhat or entirely paid by company) and a total of 8 YOE exclusively working at BCG. I’m L5 non-tech (no MBA) and make slightly more than them with 6 YOE for context. I probably work 35-40 hours a week (at Google this was even less) while they work 70-80 on average. I know some folks make a decent amount in consulting, but to my understanding, it would be very misleading to say someone can make that much after 2 YOE at BCG, since those who I know didn’t get that pay until about 5 years in after MBA.
For me, consulting wasn’t worth the $$. 2 years was enough. Feel like I have a life again since leaving.
I have friends who stayed and genuinely enjoy it, and some friends who are still there and seem to hate their life.
For me, it shouldn’t be all about $ at the end of the day. If that is the driving factor, then ok (but wow that is sad).
Feel free to stay in consulting. Feels like the OP belongs there
Stay in consulting then ✌️
Undergrads two years out of school make 230-250k at BCG? I find this incredibly hard to believe.
Even starting at 100k first year, you’re doubling salary within a year or two? Very 🐠
The statement is misleading. The $230K is typically average for consultants (this is the promoted role after 2 years as an associate or brand new MBAs) - which is essentially the same work experience as some L4s at Google with +/-
Divide that TC by the number of hours/year a non-tech L5 works and compare it to the blended hourly rate your undergrads make, then post again.
Consulting firms need to pay that much to account for the extra hours + travel that is required. If it was apples to apples, they would also adjust comp down.
People at the big 3 consulting firms in general seem to have a sense of entitlement that annoys me. I hope they stay there and do not corrupt the culture in big tech.
Rising Star
Makes sense that BCG, a consulting company, pays consultants well. Google isn’t a consulting company and has publicly prioritized working with external partners. High salaries at google go to sales and engineering.
Pro
It’s a larger range than that, 230-330 depending on a lot of factors.
We pay ~220 MAX for APC1 at 175 base and 25% bonus for top ~10% most people don’t get that—last I checked…
We overpay APC relative to outside market, underpay compared to consulting “ability”.
OP probably works 60 hours on a good week and brags about it.
230-250 is not right for Google L5. It’s the very best case scenario for a third year at BCG. Even then majority leave within 3-4 years (generously speaking) because it’s a tough profession, and when they do - most can only dream of making L5 at Google / that inaccurate comp.
You can come in at L5 from BCG with fewer years. It’s just competitive / doors don’t swing wide open because omg you worked at MBB (I worked at one).
A friend just joined a non-tech L5 role at >$300K comp.
I recently accepted non-tech L5 for ~250K and negotiated heavily. I was also surprised it wasn’t higher and barely got more compensation than I made before. Hoping the WLB is better.
The most effective strategy I’ve found is be ready to walk away from the offer. Just say “if I don’t get this number I am walking,” but only employ this strategy if you would turn down the job. If you’re not willing to walk, you’re at their whim
Weird flex bro. BCG is also up-or-out.
Few of my friends got L5 at 315k.
L4 have seen offers ranging from 260 to 280k minus sign on
Location ?
Few factors:
1. You have to negotiate comp. I entered L4 ~3 YOE on the business side and make ~$240k (base, bonus, Y1 RSUs at time of offer)
2. We adjust comp by region. You'll make less if you're not in bay area / NYC
3. Different roles can make different amounts
G6 where you at now? Has L5 happened? I joined a month back in a similar spot as yourself
