Yes, and it doesn’t mean they’re not real CDs. And no, a CD (Art) is not a glorified Design Director. Art direction is conceptual. Design is its own discipline, focused more on execution and craft, and usually sits in a different part of the agency.
Creatives come up through art direction or writing, usually as a team. So when an agency hires a team at that level, you’re getting a stronger partnership that can take on more responsibility and weigh in across the whole execution, not just their lane. The benefit is stronger thinking and craft from both sides.
As you move up toward ECD, CCO and beyond, it becomes less about discipline and more about judgment and leadership, so the distinction matters less.
ECD3 gets it
Yes and it’s a sign that neither are actual CDs
I’d love to see one CD manage some of the accounts I’ve co-managed with a CD partner. 16+ direct reports and as many briefs going simultaneously. Literally impossible unless you don’t sleep.
Yes, it's standard practice at some agencies. Seems ECD has been removed from the creative process for so long, they no longer understand how it works.
I’ve done it both ways. Much prefer to have a partner. Much easier politically when there are two of you. Emotionally, too.
I have experience both in the US and in Europe. There’s no such thing as CD-art or CD-copy in Europe, but I had the position of CD-copy in the US. To be honest, the CD position in the US is like senior creative in Europe. There are just more layers in the US, probably because companies are bigger.
That’s very agency dependent and not at all my experience.
Because we had the Art & Copy partnership structure which pretty much exists up into the Executive Creative Director level. But at some point, the weaker partner drops out. Usually it’s the art director.
The best copywriters are art directors and the best art directors can write copy. When you’ve hit CCO you’re no longer one discipline or another and it cuts both ways.
I think they wish to separate Ideas, strategy and non tangibles from Design (which can expand more) in an effort to bill the client more. Maybe, I don't know. It sounds counterproductive, that's for sure.
*Intangibles (My apologies]
It’s standard at some agencies and not at others. In my experience big hold cos are the only ones still doing teams at that level.
It depends on so many factors, mostly to do with the scale of the account and the structure and size of the agency.
