Is it totally weird that I'm thinking about skipping LinkedIn altogether in my job search? I hadn't touched my LinkedIn profile in ages until last week, and now it just seems like there’s so much noise and drama there. I’m wondering if there are better places to find solid opportunities without all the extra fluff. What do you think?

I don't find that weird at all. That site has gone from being useful and generally interesting to just being a collection of wannabe influencers and crypto scammers. But, there's still some utility in checking out the job posts. It's good for scouting, you can see who might be hiring and check out the organization's own web site. So for that it's somewhat useful.

Even if you don’t search for opportunities on LinkedIn, I highly recommend making sure your digital resume (LinkedIn profile) is up-to-date and attractive. Potential employers may still look at your LinkedIn when trying to determine your differentiators from other candidates. For example, any impressive projects that you’re allowed to add to your profile (eg. Code samples, design portfolio, etc., depending on your industry) could make the difference in getting you an offer. Any volunteer activities, awards, or certifications listed there can make a difference as well.

I totally get where you're coming from! LinkedIn can feel overwhelming with all the noise. If you're looking for a more focused job search, maybe try niche job boards in your field, or reach out directly to companies you're interested in?? Networking through smaller, specialized groups can also be a great option!

The way how I see it, Linkedln now is for the "recruiters" such as "we would like to recruit you, but pay a fee if you are interested in making money" which is more like "Recruit more people to make money than selling our product." It is honestly sad because a lot of people are desperately looking for a job non-the-less and are likely the target (such as myself sadly)

Not to mention, MOST of the jobs there are either scams or just there with 100+ applicants.

Not weird at all. I still think LinkedIn is helpful for networking, though. I just try to be selective about who I add. And, of course, there are other places to look too, like job boards for your industry or even some smaller groups online. They can be good for finding more specific opportunities.

LinkedIn Premium can be helpful with using your profile to tell you how your skills fit a job posting. I am aware we can see it ourselves, but we cannot see it from a software's perspective. For example, I saw a job where I felt like I was more than qualified, but there were several specifically identified skills and the software only identified one where I met the criteria. I could update the results by identifying those jobs the skill requirement was met. The "Am I a Good Fit" option is also helpful. However, I will always apply directly for jobs, not through a third party. Just my two cents. I hope it helps.

Use EVERY source at your disposal including LinkedIn. Don't skip anything. Customize your resume to match every keyword on the job description and send it along. Connect with as many recruiters as you can.

Hello,

I cleared all round at APISERO and received confirmation mail on 24th Dec,2021 communicating they will call for HR discussion in 8-10days. It's been 18days now and I tried to reach the SPOC but she isn't responding to the phone calls.

Is there any hiring freeze going on at APISERO?

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

Applying to roles within the same federal agency. I know you need one year within the probationary period, but can I apply to a higher GS level? For example, if I'm GS 9, receive a promotion to GS 11 at the end of probation, would i be able to apply to GS 13 roles if I'm qualified? Tried researching this for hours but only found info on applying to other agencies.

Interviewed for a GS-15 (same agency but different office) and totally aced the interview with excellent answers. They know I’m a top performer with senior references. However I noticed there was an internal candidate who has been there for few years and interviewed that’s a veteran. I feel my chances just sank and want to gauge thoughts.

I work through a contractor, and was hired 2yrs ago to be a Systems Test Engineer II. They decided last minute to make me a Software Content Manager, but kept my title as is since it was supposed to be a 6mo rotation. I’m still an SCM, and am taking on leadership roles in the group. How do I ask for a title change and pay increase to reflect what I actually do? Do I ask my contract house, or my NASA mgmt? Should I ask to make the pay retroactive since I was hired to do one thing, but do another?
