Is now a bad time to pivot from private practice into a Fed Attorney-Advisor lit position? Is the promise of job security and work-life balance going to stay with incoming Trump administration?

I have been a practicing (patent prosecution) lawyer in different firms for about 20 years. I would love to do something more creative but still techie (computers, telecom, apps, etc.). I've always been interested in improving the software that practicing lawyers use (whether patent-specific or not). I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have any strategists made the move over to consulting or client-side as a brand manager? Curious about your experience/why you made the move...

The work here is too stressful and there is absolutely zero WLB. So I decided to start looking out again. However I am not getting good interview calls. Are most companies not hiring now ? I often feel like I would enjoy client facing or advisory work because it would help me build a skill that could translate to me potentially running my own advisory firm one day… I feel my role just looks at numbers on a page which doesn’t help me develop translatable subject matter skills or expertise. I don’t want to be a robot. Any advice?

I'm launching a small PE firm and need advice on structuring equity for early founding team members.

I don't want to give up equity in the firm for several reasons but I do need to incentivize my team.

Should I offer phantom stock or form a subsidiary LLC and issue stock in that but always own the parent co? Or just offer carried interest for deals they each manage?

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

Any tips on how to bring in clients to the firm? I do L&E and one of the things my firm goes over during annual evals is whether we bring in business, even for third year associates.

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

I have a case I have enough evidence on to go to summery judgement on off the gate. Procedurally what's the best way to go a out this? D's are unrepresented and extremely difficult about settlement talks.

There’s been some turnover over the last six months at my firm, and I have taken over more files. I’m having a hard time getting ahead of briefing schedules and have been asking for extensions on a lot of recent briefs. In my practice area it’s never really an issue or objected to. However, I feel guilty that this is still happening. Any tips for getting over this?

Recently lateraled as a public defender in HCOL area to ID in LCOL area for $$$. I’ve been at the job a little over a month. My concerns are that I’m getting very little guidance or mentorship, and I’m worried about not hitting billable hours (2000 requirement but I am just over 80 for the first month). 2022 HOURS CHECK IN

For those of us whose firms start their FY on 12/1, how did you do on your hours this past year?

I feel so dumb for not knowing this answer, but what is the difference between Rule 14, Third party Complaint and Rule 20, permissive jointer? My client, defendant has an indemnity agreement with an entity that is not named in the suit and we want to bring them into the case.

I have my first solo hearing in front of opposing counsel and the Judge, were asking for a fee multiplier on a contingency case. This is in Florida BTW. Any tips or advice for my first hearing will be greatly appreciated.

So here in CA there is a lot of talk about certain jurisdictions doing virtual jury trials. As a firm we won’t agree to it and if push comes to shove we’ll take it up on. Writ. What is everyone else’s opinion?

Is sticking up for yourself even worth it? My boss is always on my ass as if I’m constantly missing, or about to miss, deadlines. I’ve never missed one. I’ve received the same damn lecture/email about monitoring all case deadlines a hundred times. I always just professionally explain that we’re not about to miss any and discuss the progress. Well, I’ve about had it and am ready to go off. I’m sick of basically being told that I’m not doing my job. How should I address this issue?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
