Is pursuing a federal or state clerkship worth the time commitment if you plan to stay strictly in corporate or transactional law? A lot of traditional academic advice says a clerkship is the gold standard for your resume, but it seems heavily geared toward litigation and appellate paths rather than corporate transactions. Spending a year or two drafting judicial opinions for a lower salary feels like it might be overkill for a path where direct corporate experience carries more immediate weight.

I have a half dozen good friends who completed federal judicial clerkships, spent their careers in transactional practices, and say their clerkships were transformational. I clerked at a USDC then became a trial lawyer. It’s hard to overstate how much you can learn from the experience, especially if your judge has been around for awhile. Best job I ever had.

I clerked and then went into a niche M&A. It was a great year and set me up well for the years to come. I actually had lunch with the Judge last month after almost a decade since my clerkship. Highly recommend, especially federal.

I clerked for a federal court before spending the next 12 years as a transactional lawyer. I clerked during a year when a family member passed away, so, looking back, the work-life balance made it the right move. Professionally, it has not exactly been a game-changer—but it does buy me a modest amount of [un]deserved gravitas.

It’s a feather in your cap forever. It’s access and insight that can’t be gained anywhere else. You can work at a law firm for 50 years, there’s no need to make it 51.

Just got a job offer but they are only giving me until Monday afternoon to decide. I'm currently in process at several other firms and the recruiter said they can't/won't give extensions. How bad is it for me to accept and then decline if I get another offer? The other companies would be paying 15-30k more and I feel like that's way too much to give up especially right out of school. I emailed the other companies I'm interviewing with to see if the process could be expedited and (1/2)

Coming up on one full year at an ID firm. Feeling overwhelmed with my experience so far. I’ve received minimal training/feedback unless it was on something I messed up. It feels like the expectations don’t align with my level of experience. I have a case load of 45-55 with very little oversight or involvement from partners. Turnover is extremely high, as I’m the second longest tenured associate in the office. Looking for some guidance on whether this is the norm or not. Compensation is low 80’s.

Anyone have any reliable free resources (CLEs, practice guides) for tax law and estate/probate/wills? I don’t have the money for anything paid, but I’d like to selfstudy these areas in the meantime. My state bar and libraries don’t appear to have a practice series or anything like that, so it’s been hard finding something viable other than the ole’ Google and pray.
