Coming up on one full year at an ID firm. Feeling overwhelmed with my experience so far. I’ve received minimal training/feedback unless it was on something I messed up. It feels like the expectations don’t align with my level of experience. I have a case load of 45-55 with very little oversight or involvement from partners. Turnover is extremely high, as I’m the second longest tenured associate in the office. Looking for some guidance on whether this is the norm or not. Compensation is low 80’s.

Look to your health and wellbeing for some guidance. Bad situation can have large negative effects on such things in the long run.

If ID isn’t for you I’d try to get out sooner rather than later. That being said, it sounds like you might just need a better firm for training and professional development. I’m at Goldberg Segalla, it’s still mainly ID but it’s a great firm all considering. Feel free to DM if you’d like, we are hiring and if we don’t have an office or need in your area I’d be happy to try to connect you with a decent ID shop near you.

Insurance defense will ruin your life. Run as far and as fast as you can.

L&E is a good pivot. Or insurance coverage

Search “ID” or “insurance defense” in this bowl. This is apparently what you signed up for.

Thank you! Will do!

I only made it 7 months at a firm identical to that. Once your year is up start preparing to leave if you’re miserable. It doesn’t really get better, you just get used to it.

I’m going to plaintiff’s employment litigation

Switch to the Plaintiffs side, you will benefit knowing the civil rules and be able to push cases more efficiently. Reach out to the states Plaintiff bar they may have job postings or ideas.

If you are overwhelmed at 45-55 cases I would not recommend this. This will be double the caseload, with more stress inducing clients. Leverage your lit experience for any other kind of general defense work.

You need to take advantage of your autonomy and write and argue (if allowed) a few good motions. MSJs are good but try to find or create unique or more complex legal issues. Use those as writing samples and try to pívot to coverage or L/E. You will probably get paid more at a larger ID firm but the caseload and WLB are just as soul crushing.

Low 80s? Nope. You can get much more than that at ID firms.

What firm? Sounds like my experience too.

I am literally in the same boat. I am strongly considering taking an L&E position with a city government. Well trying at least.

like

Yes L&E is labor and employment

I worked in ID for 12 years and that was my experience except that turnover was slightly better at my firm

I took a counsel level position at a large firm. It’s not partner track but I’m still earning way more and doing more sophisticated work so I think it’s still a step up if I ever want to leave here

I would try to leverage this to a big ID shop. Lewis Brisbois is hiring according to LinkedIn. Spend a year or two there (hopefully they have better training for you) and then branch out. Or try to branch out at the big firm.

Or do something drastic and join a public defender/prosecutor office.

I’m in ID (I work *for* one insurance company tho - not for a firm that handles multiple carriers. Idk what your situation is?). I’m also looking to get out before my 2nd full year is complete. I generally enjoy how low stakes it seems to be and it’s gotten me some GREAT trial experience but it’s very monotonous and I’m salaried with one annual bonus so the income feels insanely limited.

Which firm?

Hi ,

I have 5 years of experience as a .NET Full stack developer. I am holding offer of 21 LPA and I had HR discussion with Mastercard.

HR is not ready to share the exact budget they have (weird!! because HR usually give the idea of how much they can offer )

HR is asking me to expect something on top of the current offer I am holding.

The opening is for L8. How much offer I should expect from mastercard??

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now.
