And also Botox
Damn this was my line and you came for it
I’m VP AD and from my vantage point, the higher up you go at an agency, the more stressful it gets. Whereas you could move client side and pretty much coast as a brand manager for the rest of your career. If you can handle the agency stress, and play the politics/sales game, you can make good $$ to stay in agency, but it’s not easy or for everyone.
Perfectly stated!
Maybe a unique circumstance, but our VP of account is upper 40s, we have 4 managing directors over 40, and several group account directors or ADs at or near 40. Also had a freelance AD age 54 who I LOVED. I’m newer to my agency but am amazed at how they do it all. Some of the smartest and kindest people I’ve gotten to work with!
I love this take! The parents w young children on my team are honestly the best leaders. Instead of making themselves available 24/7, they set clear boundaries and it trickles down to the rest of the team.
Yes. “Agencies” are notoriously cliquey and don’t generally align to the standard corporate ladder. The entire agency model is built to exploit those at the bottom. Most realize this and get out. Best of luck.
Agree with this 100%
They can’t afford many great people over 40. Experience and talent commands a price. Agencies have been shedding cost for decades.
There are so many VP level people at 30 whose only qualification seems to be being the only ones who haven't left
A lot of people that want to have children go client side
Yeah it’s not that they only want to hire young people. Young people are the only ones willing to subject themselves to this kind of torturous life 😂
I honestly wonder how it's even possible to have a family in this environment
Or I guess the dream is make enough money and move to a more chilled/ part time job when you’re a bit older
Finally moved client side and it’s the best decision I ever made!
Do you work in NYC? I've worked/lived there and in LA and I absolutely noticed people were much younger in their respective roles in NYC. There's more of a culture of moving up the ranks quickly.
NYC based, but team is all over East coast
Its a stressful job
As you get older you just want a more chilled work environment. Most older people I know above 40 moved to the client side.
I'm 36, with a 2-year old and considering it.
How does the client side pay compared to the agency side, relatively?
I think it depends, but generally is better pay client side than agency side.
F 43 Still agency side after 10 years . Two kids under 8. Married to someone in marketing who gets it but pretty much over this ad life. Clients get worse by the year. Considering client side but honestly, the pay is not as good!
I joined the agency world late, after I did client side, when my kids were teenagers and I wanted more variety and challenge. I have been to three agencies and all three have had plenty of women over 40. I don’t think I could’ve done it when my kids were younger though.
I’m 43 and a Group Account Director, but I’m at a small independent shop so can’t speak for the bigger agencies
In my 50s here and I am clinging on but damn if it isn’t a slog every single day. Trying to hold on until retirement. Mentally so done with the BS but I guess time will tell if I’m forced out or just have to give up before I’m financially ready.
