I would say FP&A is somewhat accounting related at the lower levels, but it gets further and further away as you move up (which I am a fan of). I like it and find value in it. Although, I wouldn't say I'm "passionate" in the sense that I think I'm saving/improving lives.
FP&A is typically a mix of (1) routine/reporting related tasks like forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis and (2) ad-hoc/strategic analysis like NPV analysis, product mix, which suppliers to purchase from, product enhancements in line with current customer habits/trends, etc. I would say I enjoy the strategic part way more. You actually have a seat at the table regarding strategy, growth, investments, etc.
But if you're looking for something where you provide value beyond helping a company perform better, that's tough to find. Maybe doing accounting work for a not-for-profit you are passionate about is an option. Taxes for underprivileged communities. If you're passionate about teaching, maybe you can be a professor. All of those will come with their own challenges, of course.
Non-profit careers or Professor both sound very interesting. I have always enjoyed Accounting and don’t regret majoring in it, however, I do want a career that provides value outside of better performance for businesses.
