It would be interesting to know how they came up with that number. My first instinct is that they're figuring on every small business needing a cybersecurity person. That would be a vast number of potential jobs, but in reality those positions are not actually available.
There is no shortage like this. This figure has been a commonly debunked myth for years.
Of the job openings aren’t there then presumably it means that companies don’t see the need to employ people to do this tasks as the cost of doing so is higher than the cost of them not being done. Therefore the need doesn’t exist.
Not so much a people shortage as a pay shortage. Companies don’t see the enough value from cyber people to justify spending the amount of money they would need to hire good ones.
I've been hearing this number too and have felt totally confused because whenever I look for cybersecurity jobs I cannot find great openings anywhere. Makes sense that it's more of a financial issue and that they cannot hire the people they would want/need to build it up even more
They want folks to upskill, but then not pay them what they deserve. Also, they outsource like crazy these days. US resources are "Cost Prohibitive."
