Is this a midlife crisis or is this industry finally taking its toll? For the first time in my career, I don’t have a goal that motivates me nor do I feel any purpose behind the work we do. Pressures to offshore work, micromanagement from leadership, lack of support/development opportunities, talk of AI eventually replacing our role. Always knew it would be lonely at the top but the role of a puppet or what feels like middle-mgmt when you question the direction is exhausting and demotivating….

I hear you. I ended up leaving a top 25 firm as a partner and going on my own because it was so frustrating feeling like “you made it” and were an owner but had less input in direction of the firm than admin or an intern.

Not at all. It has taken longer than I expected to quit having the feeling of being judged by some of the partners from my old firm but after getting them out of my head it has been great!

You are me!!

I think there is a lot of this going around.

Feel the same for sure.

Help your people navigate the challenges they are likely having - imagine how they are feeling. AI isn’t going to replace an expert, but it may replace your staff. They have far more reason to be anxious- so maybe giving back to them will give you a sense of purpose?

Spot on. Been a partner for quite a while. But making partner or just being a partner is like winning a pie eating contest where the prize is more pie.

I’m a new patent prosecution associate and unfortunately only just now realized that maybe prosecuting patents isn’t something I want to do long term. I loved copyright (and trademark) in law school, but I have loans to pay off. Should I stick it out in my current role to pay them off before I jump ship to a new practice area or will I be pigeonholed forever to patents if I stay here for 2-3 years?

How would someone coming from mostly retail wireless sales get into the tech sales industry? I have been a top performer in every sales job that I have had since I started my career almost 10 years ago. I don't have a degree which I feel might be keeping me from getting my foot in the door but I know I would be amazing in this field. I currently work out in the field selling to customers that have no idea I am coming and I consistently perform at the top of my market.

General corporate in NY looking to lateral into tech transactions at one of the EC/VC firms. I’ve heard that I may get a class cut if I make the move but I’m ok with that. My worry is that EC/VC firms are crazy busy work differently from general corp, I also won’t have control over my hours, and potentially worse based on how billing differs (block billing on a few clients vs having to work with 15 or more startups). Is the same true for tech trans or IP group?

A colleague told me today that Google separates Product Manager and Product Owner as two separate roles. I believe that one PM role is preferred in the industry and most modern software companies, especially FAANG companies, only have PMs. Just curious what others have experienced and if I'm correct in my assumption.

Have you ever taken a career slow down? I am feeling burnt out from COVID and the incremental responsibilities thrown my way over the last 5+ years. I feel like my health has deteriorated. I like my company, but I want to do less. I don’t need to be a HR Director, CHRO, etc. With a career slowdown, I am prepared for a lower compensation and would want decent benefits. Any lessons learned or success stories about career slowdowns?

Are you aware of the CPA exam credit extension to 2021 for NY CPA candidates impacted by COVID19? It’s on a person-by-person basis and you need to request the extension. The extension would really help me, but I’m not sure what more to tell them in my email than the fact that I couldn’t sit for the exams this Spring/Summer due to test centers closing in NYC.
