It’s so important to leave a good impression on the people in your professional network. My team is hiring and I have gotten some outreach from people I know from school and past jobs, and it makes a massive difference in how I handle the outreach if the person is on good terms with me.

Anyone have experience, good or bad, with people trying to network with you or leverage your connections?

Yes I’ve had SO MANY people reach out to me when we had openings on my team. Even a few Partners I worked with for more senior positions. I’m in a small market, so the positions were in house and very coveted.

I’m gonna be honest I only ever mentioned one of them to my boss (hiring manager) because it’s the only person I’d want to work with again. For the others, I was very friendly, answered questions, and said I’d ask my boss about their search so far but never committed to give a good recommendation (and was never asked to do so). I was honest about one or two people I really didn’t think would be a good fit, but other than that, I try to only be a reference for people I actually want to vouch for.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
