Yup. My son is taking about perusing film. My husband and I (both graphic design majors) warned him about the arts careers and how AI is affecting the space. My designer husband is not working (disability) and I changed careers at 40. But in my current career, AI feels very threatening. Hope I am employable for another 20 years. I feel for these college kids trying to decide on their careers today.
I’m warning anyone who will listen to stay away from graphic design careers. The field has been struggling for the past 7years or so, and now AI and tools like Canva have essentially finished off what was once a thriving profession. It’s no longer a sustainable path.
After 25 years of experience, I realized it was time for me to move on. I’m no longer chasing a “graphic design” job, I’m focused on earning a paycheck for my family. That means doing whatever it takes, regardless of what my college degree says. Good luck and and keep an open mind. Our skills can transfer into many things.
A lot of industries are struggling with decreasing pay and unemployment, but tech and creative industries seem the worst off. It is so incredibly heartbreaking to me that we have developed this incredible technology and we are using it to replace people, not support people. And using it for creativity instead of monotonous tasks? I don't know who to be furious at, but I'm furious. I agree with you completely that this is not a field to be entering now or for a while into the future until we start appreciating people again.
Huge career changes are upon us. I think we are going to see upheavals in a lot of industries. Very hard to say right now where to focus efforts, because not much of anything seems promising in terms of stability.
Freelance. Design is the most in demand and billable creative skill.
I agree
Thank you for starting this thread, and thanks to everyone for sharing their insights. With over 18 years in the creative industry—specifically graphic design—I find myself in a challenging transition. After being laid off eight months ago, I was only able to start my search in earnest recently due to family emergencies.
My most recent role was Design Team Lead, and I’m now looking to progress into Design Manager or similar leadership positions. While I’ve had a few interviews, I haven't landed the right fit yet. The market is incredibly competitive; seeing 800+ applications for a single senior role is becoming the norm. It’s also disheartening to see AI potentially replacing roles rather than simply enhancing them. That said, I agree with the point made earlier—freelancing is looking like an increasingly viable path forward.
