I've been an RN for three years on a med-surg floor and I'm thinking about specializing in critical care. The fast-paced environment and complex patient cases appeal to me, but I'm also worried about pigeonholing myself. Will it be hard to switch back to a less specialized area later on, or even move into a non-clinical role? Articles like this are awesome at listing the pros, but never the cons!

Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks

No, I worked cardiac then moved to ER. I'm now no longer bedside. I am in care coordination. It's a culture shock for you...yes, but movement isn't hard for nurses. A lot of us are nomadic and change not just jobs but specialities every so often.
Now there are some specialties it's hard to get into if you didn't start there, like NICU, it can be done...just easier if you aren't working as an adult er nurse and then trying to switch to specialized NICU.
No, I worked adult critical care for & ER for over 20 years. The knowledge & experience I gained during this time has been invaluable; transitioning to other areas of nursing (Transplant Coordination, Case Management, Care Coordination/Discharge Planning) has been easier because of my critical care experience. Intuitive skills, i.e. analysis & critical thinking cannot be taught in a classroom environment; they can only be developed & become well-honed skills through experience.
