I've been at my firm for 14 months and my offer letter says that after 1 year I am elegible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. I finally completed my review and exceeded expectations on most categories while fully meeting on the rest. I received a salary increase of not even 3% and no mention of a bonus during the call. Wondering if this was an oversight or if the firm is choosing to not pay me a bonus at all. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Discretionary is the key word in that phrase about bonus eligibility

I get that part, just seems odd that I'm rated as a top performer in my group and they won't even throw me a bone. At least the increase matches inflation... ha.

You could just ask them?

But to give you my perspective, ever since Covid there has been a huge shift on employee loyalty/company loyalty. Companies don’t reward loyalty, nor do they want to pay for top talent. I’ve seen companies try to get away with C level talent and when it doesn’t work out, they just fire them and move onto the next one. working hard doesn’t actually mean you’re gonna get paid more.

I really do think people should start looking at smaller companies that you can have a bigger impact on. Traditionally there was higher risk with these molar companies, but I don’t think it’s any different with corporate‘s now due to the lack of loyalty.

I’m going to bring it up once we come back from the holiday break and ask for a clear answer. My salary is pretty good I’d say, but putting a bonus on my employment contract and then not paying anything after I perform really well is very odd.

You are eligible, not entitled.

smart

I don’t know you know what “hence” means.

Hence you shouldn’t be surprised here. You are not entitled to bonus. You are eligible to run as the President of the US too.

Also have a direct chat with your manager when you are told about your comp.

One interpretation is that your earnings after one year are bonus eligible. So your first bonus is after two years.

Ah, then you need to ask

Discretionary and bonus = stick and carrot

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?
