I’ve been at my firm for 3 years but there’s no real talk of partnership and I barely get any client exposure. I recently got a lateral offer from a smaller firm that’s scrappier, less prestigious, but offering more ownership, faster growth, and the chance to actually build relationships with clients. It feels risky, but I’m also tired of being “patient” while my career stalls. Do I make the leap?

Can you live under scrappy environment or do you need structure? Picture yourself in their shoes. Unless the thought of living in such scrappy environment freaks you out, your growth as a lawyer is significantly more valuable in the long run than the prestige of your employer. In which environment will you develop better lawyering skills (and that includes client counseling)? You brought yourself where you are. Bet on yourself on where you want to be.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice?
