Honestly, it was easier than I expected. I thought it would be a tough transition but people seem to respect freelance work more than they have in the past.
If you've been working as a copywriter you might have better luck trying for a marketing job or something in creative services. Whatever prompted you to leave journalism in the first place will still be the case today. If anything, conditions have gotten worse and jobs have become more scarce. Walking back into a newsroom after working as a copywriter doesn't seem too likely, in all honesty.
I went from freelancing back to a staff role last year. The biggest adjustment was losing some freedom but gaining stability. The surprising part was how much I appreciated having colleagues to bounce ideas off again.
Going back full-time after freelancing can be a shock to the system. Steady pay and team support made up for it. The hardest part was adjusting to office politics again.
