I've been freelancing for the last three years, but I'm thinking about going back to a previous full-time staff writer job in a newsroom. It’s been a while since I've worked in that kind of environment, so I'm wondering if anyone here has made that switch from freelancing. What helped you transition, and what was the most surprising thing about it?

Honestly, it was easier than I expected. I thought it would be a tough transition but people seem to respect freelance work more than they have in the past.

If you've been working as a copywriter you might have better luck trying for a marketing job or something in creative services. Whatever prompted you to leave journalism in the first place will still be the case today. If anything, conditions have gotten worse and jobs have become more scarce. Walking back into a newsroom after working as a copywriter doesn't seem too likely, in all honesty.

I went from freelancing back to a staff role last year. The biggest adjustment was losing some freedom but gaining stability. The surprising part was how much I appreciated having colleagues to bounce ideas off again.

Going back full-time after freelancing can be a shock to the system. Steady pay and team support made up for it. The hardest part was adjusting to office politics again.

Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. I am a firm believer that this will not change for a long time, local TV will continue to live as long as we stand for it.

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Has anyone had experience with job sharing in this type of a role?
