How it happens here. They are required to have interviews and sometimes you don't get the promotion because someone comes out of nowhere that's a better fit
It depends on how your company does things. A lot of businesses will make people interview for promotions, even if they're internal promotions.
It honestly depends on the company. In my experience, they will still make you interview for it. They may even interview outside. It is pretty unheard of to just be moved up.
Don't be afraid to ask. That's a very valid question to ask your manager and may even benefit you by showing you are staying on top of this transition and thinking ahead. In the same vein, if it's relevant, you could also ask if there's anything your manager might advise that could help you best prepare for this advancement.
Always be prepared I have had it go both ways.
