Try to make friends with some members of a team you like and try to basically latch on to them to be part of that group. Make sure the members and team leads get used to you being around them...so you’re basically sought out instead of just being treated as part of a talent pool.
Kind’ve like making new friends in college, hopefully you’ll be considered as part of the group and even on a sick day, they’d feel like they’re missing a valuable part of the team. Good luck!
Do things you aren’t assigned to do: see a project hanging on the board/wall/whatever that you have an idea for? Ask the CD if they would mind if you threw some ideas/designs at it and work on those after hours or when your assigned tasks are done. If you’re not being given opportunities, you gotta create them
Talk to HR or Senior Management...but not for the reason you think. Maybe there’s a new employee program they’re getting ready to announce or a big agency meeting coming up or a credentials meeting for a pitch. There’s a lot of internal things always going that need art for posting on the office wall. Half the time FTEs don’t have the bandwidth for this end up staying late to do this. No, it’s not consumer facing but you can see it through to completion and it will put your work in front of the agency.
they just pull you in for the first brief that needs an extra pair of hands. No solid team connections because I’m not in any team, I’m just a floater. Haven’t been able to produce anything portfolio worthy, only mockups. Application letters from other agencies get ignored, what can a young hopeful fella like me do?
If you’re hungry enough. So more than you’re asked to. Find out about the brief on the side. Talk to the other team members. But don’t steal any ideas. Try to get involve. Come up with ideas. Show to the CD. Your ideas could be picked or not. But you’ve made it obvious you’re able to contribute and step up.
“Be more indispensable” is about as constructive as “just make it awesome”.
Push for specificity. Ask what you are doing well and what needs improvement from those reviewing you. You can also ask what they did when they were starting out.
Step back and watch what successful team leads are doing. Observe what types of ideas get traction and where they are going for inspiration.
Getting onto a project during the creative brief stage is important. Try to shape projects as best you can at an early stage.
I would say try to shed any apprehension if sharing ideas. Don’t be afraid of having a bad idea. Sometimes you have to get through a few of those to get to the good ones.
Get your hands on the briefs that are going around and solve them yourself. If you find that you end up liking some of it, share it with the CD on the project. It shows that you can think and concept which is what an art director does first and foremost. It seems like you're filling a design role right now (which isn't bad, but won't get you what you want).
Seek mentorship from more senior creatives and CDs. Ask to go to coffee or lunch. Ask them how you can be better. How you can grow. Make connections, those are the people who will advocate for you to the hiring decision makers.
Do production work. Banners, animations etc. most likely they don’t need your concepts. Work on the clients that have sold in creative already and have a list of creative that needs to be delivered. Also Play the long game. Make connections for later in your career. Realistically an internship might be all this is. If it’s a good enough shop other places will be interested in you because you worked there. And the people that work there now will be working at other places soon
