I’ve been thinking a lot about stability versus growth. Sometimes a role offers security and decent compensation but limited advancement. Other times, a new opportunity feels riskier but potentially more aligned with long-term goals. I’ve wrestled with whether staying comfortable can quietly stall progress. How do you personally evaluate when it’s time to leave a stable role for something uncertain?

In this economy, I prioritize security and safety over opportunity and risk. When there are plenty of opportunities, I'm fine taking on a potentially risky position. But right now does not feel like one of those times.

I’m probably not the best to give advice on this. Because after two maybe three years, I start to get antsy and need to make a change. Then I will move or take a new job.

I let my finances tell me.
I’m toward the latter half of my career and had stayed with safe long enough to achieve my FI.
And that was the right thing to do because now I have that, so if a risk doesn’t pan out, I can jump to something else.

I have a family to support so I am fully in stability mode
I only make safe moves since it’s tough out there

A few years ago I was more willing to take the risky moves

A PSA to all consultants applying for business development jobs: please figure out what business development means before applying. Hint: it refers to a specific function, and is not, in fact, a catch-all term for all business activities in pharma/biotech.

Any Amazon counsel or other FAANG attorneys willing to share how their comp review has worked? I’m really happy with my offer(lower base, really high signing bonus and decent RSUs) and was told their would be yearly comp reviews but wondering how that plays out the first few years...

How long is too long to try to push back a start date? Getting a formal offer early next week but trying to keep that big law bonus if possible. Firm pays out bonuses Dec 30 & I have a vacation scheduled Dec 19-23 (and was planning on working remotely the week after too). Ideally want to get EOY bonus or negotiate for a signing bonus but is it too much to push for signing bonus and those weeks off? I'm open to working remotely those two weeks but know that may not be the best when I start.

I am fairly green in academia (< 1 year) and I want to shift to an area of research which I always wanted to do but never could as a Ph.D. student (because of conflict of interest).
The issue I am facing is that due to lack of my documented research experience in this field (read, lack of papers) I am finding it very hard to land any grant and reviewers keep saying "The PI hasn't demonstrated any experience in said research" blah blah.
Any advice on how to overcome this?

Can anyone give me their honest opinion on working at Eli Lilly, the Indy site? I have a few coworkers that have worked there in the past but no one recently. Salaries would be comparable (Lilly would most likely be a little more with bonuses), but if the culture sucks, I’d hate to burn a bridge with Envigo.
