I've been thinking about whether this job is a "forever" job or if people eventually move on to something else. I think more and more about what life might be like if I didn't have to code and do technical work all the time. Do you plan to stay in the field for a long time, or do you have an exit strategy?

Too physical for me and im not that rich yet. Just aim for a simple job where your responsibility are just to backup data and integrate system (mature env) and you don't need to build much

I myself don't feel like this is a forever job. Im leaning towards a more stable jobs like a tech support in a big hospital, university, something. The pay may be not that much but it is sure is stable.

Tech support at a big hospital! That sounds nice and could be part time too

Would surely like to hear others opinion on this. Like what I do but dealing with feelings of being burnt out by pace and the constant pressure on delivery/ impact

I go back and forth. Some weeks I want out completely, other weeks I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’m taking that as a sign not to make any drastic moves yet.

Same, I think it’s because I live having a team I can interact with daily. I wonder if that’s part of it for you too

Definitely not a forever job. I’ve done it for 11 years now and it’s truly soul sucking but man is the fiscal comfort nice. My husband and I decided in six years after we have hoarded enough money we can demote ourselves to simpler jobs.

My plan is to exit as soon as humanly possible (FIRE).

Me too. I don’t spend a ton of money which helps

A director in another unit wants to meet me to “continue a conversation we started last year”. He is referring to the time I had asked him if there were openings on his team. That was over a year ago. I am not too happy where I am right now ( I stayed where I was). I also don’t know if he really has an opportunity or if this is just some corporate circle jerk where my current director is trying to “smoke me out”. I don’t speak poorly of my team/work. How would you approach this conversation?

Anyone else super unimpressed with administrative support with a new firm after lateraling? I told a partner I’d just take care of a routine task myself. He told me my rate is too high and to use a “project manager” (basically an intern they can pay less than a paralegal). We have a 40 person group and 3 project managers making starvation wages. Big firm. You’d know the name.

First post, not sure if this is the best bowl to use but here goes. I’m wondering if anyone can share a bit about their experience working at MongoDB. I have seen they are hiring for many roles and am curious to hear about their experience. In particular, I would like to hear about software engineer roles. Currently I work on database engine C++ code and have seen some roles that indicate continuing down this stream would be possible with my skillset.

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!
