The Adobe Creative Suite is a standard in the industry. While there are paid courses available to learn these programs, there are also many free tutorials online on YouTube
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. There are many ways to learn them for free or cheap. One way is to watch video tutorials on YouTube or Lynda.com. Another way is to find a local community college that offers graphic design classes.
To work in advertising or graphic design, you will need to be familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and InDesign. You can learn them completely for free with enough motivation with YouTube videos
Gimp is completely free and open source, I use that program all the time. https://www.gimp.org/
There are a lot of programs you can find online for free, I highly recommend finding one that will let you work in vectors. Vector images can be scaled up or down as much as you want, and they won't distort because they aren't made of pixels
I don't work with a lot of computer programs, most of my work is on paper. But I have heard that GIMP is a good program. I can't figure out the controls so I get frustrated, but there are tutorials online
