I’ve been trying to cut back on my coffee and diet soda habit, and it’s been tougher than I expected. The mid-day slump hits and my first instinct is still caffeine every time. And yeah, I know the obvious answer is “just get more sleep,” but assuming that’s not always realistic… what are people actually drinking (or doing) to stay energized during the day?

Eat less carbs at lunch a go for a brisk walk

like

That’s a good call. I actually don’t really eat lunch, but I’ll try the quick walk and see if that helps reset things a bit.

I’ve never been accustomed to drinking a lot of caffeine, so take this with a grain of salt… I drink a lot of water during the day and will stand at my desk in the afternoon when I’m starting to feel tired.

I don’t think you can beat the afternoon slump, but there are things you can do to try and wake your body up.

Good luck!

That’s actually really helpful, appreciate it. I’ve been trying to drink more water too, but the standing desk idea is a good one, might have to try that. You’re probably right though, the afternoon slump might just be unavoidable.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?
