McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

OP, that’s a serious pay increase. I know it’s gonna be a tough decision on your end but if it’s a company you can see yourself with. I’d jump ship. It’s a business decision at the end of the day
They took a gamble? You just validated that you’re under rated in their eyes. They WILL lay you off the second they stop having billable roles for you. Just thank yourself you got an exit early.
Consider staying with the gov long enough to keep your health bennies in retirement.
I did something similar (left gov to work for a partner). My team was MORE than understanding when I told them it was a 65k bump in base pay (not including all the extra benefits). It’s ok to feel “sad” to leave a team, but at the end of the day they are not paying your bills.
If it’s a money play then it’s a no brainer. But don’t be seduced by it. Make sure you’d actually enjoy the company/role/team. If it’s money alone you’re after, it’s pretty easy to make $50k more than govt so I’d explore options before jumping. Also, don’t stay govt just for the benefits…stay because you want it. Benefits are a joke compared to what you can do for yourself with the pay difference.
Deuces! Lol
another thing to ease your conscience: from the point of view of your current team there’s actually a plus side to you leaving to go government, cause now they will have a client who they know well and (presumably) have a good relationship with. I get why you would feel guilty but this kind of thing happens all the time. Take the money!
No hesitation take the money
I would do what is best for you. It is not your job to worry about everyone else. That would be a huge mistake to turn down that much money.
What did you end up doing?
I negotiated for a higher offer, a later start date and accepted the job.
It was tough but I had to think about what would be best for me, my future, and family. I'll be making over 50% my current salary + a bonus and have a ton of other perks that I could never get here.
Still feel guilty but I know it's what's best
