I’ve done a few solo trips, and while I loved the freedom—setting my own schedule, eating wherever I wanted—there were moments of loneliness that no one really talks about. Like sitting alone at a beautiful café in Paris, surrounded by people laughing with friends, and feeling this weird mix of independence and isolation. Social media makes solo travel look like a non-stop adventure, but is it really as life-changing as people claim? What’s your take—do we over-romanticize solo travel, or does the solitude add to the magic?

Solo travel isn’t about constant excitement—it’s about sitting with yourself, which can be uncomfortable. That’s the point. We’re so used to filling silence with people or distractions, but when you travel solo, you’re forced to be present. It’s not always fun, but it’s real. The magic isn’t in the Instagram-worthy moments; it’s in realizing you’re okay, even when you’re completely alone.

Solo travel is romanticized, but that doesn’t mean it’s not magical. The solitude can feel heavy at times, but those quiet moments often lead to the most personal growth. I’ve had days where I felt lonely, sure—but I’ve also met incredible people because I was open to conversations I wouldn’t have had if I’d been with friends. It’s a mix of both: liberating and, yeah, sometimes lonely.

It can be very lonely, yes.

I enjoy long solo trips better when I connect with local expat communities, sign up for meetups, alumni group meeting, go on group tours, etc. also chat up locals whenever comfortable.

I did 6 months on my own and there were times where I did feel a bit isolated. I booked tours or group activities every other week or so to have opportunities to socialize if I felt the need, but most of my time was dedicated for me, my agenda, and enjoying my own company and thoughts. Blogging and social media kept me connected to the real world but I still love being in the solo bubble — loads of opportunity for untapped freedom you would not normally have when traveling with a partner or in a group.

I think there is something really great and mindful about finally feeling okay with being on your own during solo travel. I also found that this pushed me out of my comfort zone to attend certain events in order to meet people, who I then may spend the next few days with or stay in contact with. I think solo travel gives us some time for reflection that we may not give ourselves in our every day life.

Been with my GF since college and we recently hit the 4 year mark. 1-2 years into our relationship I found out she had instances of micro-cheating (flirting with guys, talking to ex’s etc - but nothing physical) and we addressed it. To her credit and my knowledge, she’s been apologetic and great at respecting boundaries since, but I still feel the pain from her actions years ago (and have talked to her about it).
