My remote team was the highest performing team I’ve ever worked on. All in-office teams I’ve managed ever since have been completely ineffective cess pits of gossip.
Absolutely. I felt like I had to be extra intentional, like scheduling virtual “hallway chats” just to get that same casual rapport. Definitely made me appreciate how much trust is built in the in-between moments.
It's doable remotely, but it's easier in person for sure. Because you can interact with the person on a more regular basis (without having to place a call) it's easier to gauge how they are really feeling throughout the day, which allows you to tailor your approach. In a remote environment it feels like all conversations are happening in individual silos and you don't get to observe other interactions the people you are leading might be having.
There is definitely things you miss working remotely, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.
Depends on the line of business, but most PS benefit from a global workforce anyway.
I think the ones that struggle the most are those that are trying to build office cults (a.k.a. communities). It's hard to indoctrinate people when they are remote.
If, however you are about outcomes and have reasonably acceptable views on work, then I think remote work (with some in person gatherings where necessary) is the model to build.
