Freelance is feast or famine—take the bag while it’s hot, stack cash, and build your own safety net. Staff jobs sell you “security,” but they’ll still cut you loose in a reorg. There’s no real loyalty—just different kinds of risk.
Freelance is the illusion of freedom and fulltime is the illusion of stability. Can you take the fulltime role and quietly continue freelancing on the DL?
The agency world is tumultuous. Do the math… if your freelance is pretty steady, your making about $58k more a year freelancing than the $85k offer- that is if you’re at least 5 days a week steady work throughout the year. Benefits - with that figure, shouldn’t be a problem. Put some away for savings when you have down time. Enjoy really being your own boss, and having the freedom to work or not. I’m believe In between- as long as you’re a W2 freelancer, you can claim unemployment.
Freelance hands down for happiness. But long term - realize that simply being at an agency… like just showing up to work every day regardless of what you actually do… will advance your career. As a freelancer, that’s on you.
But then again, I’ve seen perm employees who show up and do great work and never get promoted and then I see ass kissers who do the minimum and get promoted. Sometimes it’s not what you do but who’s ass you kiss that get you where you want to be. So I guess if you’re an ass kisser… you just might move up that ladder faster. I’d rather freelance than deal with that BS.
You need to up that rate. What level are you?
