It’s no different than any technical, white collar function now. There is the real threat of AI doing our jobs, but the technology is not there without the context of a person.
Most of our job is just building consensus and getting stakeholders to actually do stuff, so that’s not really replaceable by AI anyway.
That’s the job at the higher levels of thr pyramid
all the main consulting firms are in trouble tbh
Long story short, we need less people, but still need people.
I see AI helping with alot of the outputs, people don't see how much human work went into it behind the scenes. They didn't see me working on this and constantly correcting the outputs or having to completely redirect what the AI was circling around. There was a massive amount of planning and coordination that went into this and I argue that my 7 YOE in consulting and prior 10 in the military that this is why is succeeded.
People look at a couple consulting slides, but they never look through the appendix to see how much actual work goes into backing up those exec summaries. There is a real disconnect between the execs looking at their summaries and thinking you can now replace people with AI because its really good at making exec *looking* summary slides.

Agree. The AI tools are often wrong, and it’s so obvious when people just copy paste the output.
As a founder of a AI tool myself - clairity.uk we started with the notion that we shall replace consulting only to realise after numerous iterations that the AI is really an enabler for people rather than a replacer. So we pivoted to that mindset to help individuals and companies make their workflows efficient rather than replace them.
My personal opinion is that the layoffs affecting the workforce is primarily a stock market gain phenomenon. These models and tools are going to become expensive. Some of the AI tools for coding are already upto $2000 / a month. No matter what you do, you still need a human to start with provision of input, adjust the output and quality check. So if you have 3 people using the tool. The tool in total is the 4th FTE.
Anyways I am going to be booted out of here for a negative narrative on AI 😂. But it’s coming !
Can they sell it? No. Can they exclude confidence in the subject matter, no. Can they formulate relationships, no. Can they be a trusted advisor, no. Dude, AI cant do your job.
It’s like AI when you say exclude instead of exude 😏

It should be the same narrative like tech firms. Tech is doing layoffs at ridiculous levels. At least at consulting , you need someone who the clients can bark at if things go bust. At tech, even that is not needed
“It’s a generational tech and we need to take aggressive measures to stay aligned which requires streamlining our talent model “
Consulting makes money from bums on seats, not products/advertising/outcomes. That's the main difference.
Cant blame the AI when things don't go right. A lot of times the allure of consultants is having a scapegoat if things don't turn out as planned. Clients will always be willing to pay for the security blanket
Because AI tools aren’t actually that good? My teams who use AI the most produce the worst output. You probably don’t really have a good quality bar. It’s notable tech firms have had way more layoffs than consulting.
