Joined in house from big law about a year and a half ago… I’m a 2018 law grad. Seeing people on LinkedIn from my class or previous coworkers making partner at their law firm has been… difficult. I don’t know exactly if it’s regret or jealousy or what, but any other in-house people have the same reaction?

Wise counsel my mother taught me….

No need to envy someone else for what they have unless you’re willing to do what they did to get it.

You’ve managed to escape Big Law’s stress and burnout. Be confident that you made the right decision.

Remember partnership is simply status, establish a different kind of status for yourself.

Use your GC position to establish yourself as an authority in the industry:

• Speak at conferences
• Write for blogs
• Seek podcast guest spots

Pretty soon, your classmates will be envying YOU when they see YOUR name everywhere.

Thanks! Wide counsel for sure

A couple people make partner. A lot of people crash out (including some of those partners). A few people literally kill themselves/attempt to.

It's not worth it. Getting a great IHC exit is absolutely the right call.

Thanks for the perspective

Have you already forgotten how miserable Big Law is?

like

I laugh when I see the announcements cause I just know how miserable they are and they’ll all be divorced in a few years with kids who don’t see or speak to them once they leave for college.

I left 3 months out from partnership. No regrets.

You are literally me. Also 2018 grad that left big law and went in house a year ago. The last two weeks have been nonstop parter promotions. Feeling fomo or like I made the wrong call. But have to remember there's a reason I went in house...

Glad I’m not the only one!

Bro relax. Enjoy life no one will care at the end what job you had or how much you worked. I try and work as little as possible. Im in house and live it.

This is the mindset

Late to this but also a 2018 grad and it was an interesting feeling seeing the associates in the year above getting promoted to partner and counsel. Not necessarily in like a fomo way, more just wondering if I would be better or more competent or ready for that level too if I had just stuck around (though i never had partner aspirations)

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
