If you are home buying in Texas, Colorado, or Georgia, consider Homeward- they make all cash offers and buy the house for you. Then you rent from them until you can buy it back from them with a mortgage or after selling your current home. I worked with them last year when making offer in Austin, Texas. This is McKinsey. They’ll run an organizational strategy and design program with your employer, and make sure your department is laid off in the restructuring. That way they can hire you in cleanly. It’s the McK way. Like a tragic bear hug.
Depending on who your employer is, the may use a third party verification company, so your employer may not be called at all. I know at Deloitte we get our own letters internally, or we provide contacts for a thing called The Work Number.

Background checks wouldn’t be likely to involve your prior firm at all. They would be checking public records like criminal history, credit history, and probably social media.
Most big firms provide ways to verify employment (like the “work number” mentioned above) that just provide verification of the start (and if applicable end) dates when you were working there, which is usually the only information they would provide. It is used for other things like mortgages etc. so it wouldn’t normally tip off your employer that you are interviewing.
It could be different for any particular employer but that’s the most common way it works with big consulting firms.
We have The Work Number too. I needed employment verification for signing a lease and they did it through there. But background checks don’t typically go through that avenue afaik

I’m with a bank. We do use the work number so if they want that, as long as my bank doesn’t know, that’s fine with me.
Did they ask you for references?
I thought they didn't (I camr in as a BA and wasn't asked for them)
If it's just a background check, you could provide payslips and a copy of your contract to prove you work there
