Just had a demo of Co-Counsel with WestLaw. I don’t think AI is there yet but I think AI is close to it. I feel like I’m watching my job as an associate disappear. Is anyone else anxious about the long-term ramifications and if this will impact careers?

Lmao no; it will simply make routine tasks less irritating, revenues and profits will continue their parabolic rise, and junior associates will keep being hired to write good prompts and check the work

like

It’s a force multiplier. Firms still need to mid level and senior attorneys. Those don’t grow on trees, they have to be cultivated from juniors.

like

not enough boomers are retiring from law so the number of juniors needed to train will be cut down with AI or AI agents will be good enough to do away with juniors

Ask it the same question multiple times. You'll get multiple answers or answers that will omit things in previous responses, etc. Until AI is able to just flat out give a complete, full, and accurate answer (and also be able to affirmatively say no to things...) we're fine. We're absolutely nowhere near that and that's the side of the AI stuff that's going to be really hard to code right.

like

It’s not really allowed to say “it depends.”
Which is the correct answer if not enough information has been provided in the prompt. Nor does it cross-examine you and require you to answer questions before it answers.

Without that, it has to make assumptions and those may vary each time it runs it.

A demo of something they had pre-prepared? Of course it was going to be good. A family member of mine, also an attorney, is a contractor for an AI lab, training models/agents like Co-Counsel. They can’t tell me too much but they definitely don’t think AI is close to it. I sometimes ask questions about the basic securities laws and get the weirdest wrong answers (e.g., that the deadline for a filing is a Sunday).

then ask for a no obligation free trial period and test it out according to the work you are doing. The caveat is that you will likely not be able to save the work for future reference... however, if you are a paying subscriber then saving is not an issue.

I had a baby almost a year ago. I should start a 529 account for my child but I am originally from France which also makes her a French citizen and she could easily go to college in France for not much money. It’s pretty much free there, I have 0 Student loan debt. With that in mind, a 529 would not be super helpful if we go that route. Should I consider other options? Do you have suggestions? Thanks so much!

Additional Posts in Big Law

Hey everyone, I'm currently getting my undergraduate in Finance/Risk Management with a comm minor with hopes of law school immediately after grad. I have been recently thinking of switching to a double major of business management along with the finance. Want to practice corporate law, does anyone think this change would be worth it? Thanks!

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. Need to stay in BL for at least another year for the money, but eventually want to move in-house. The path to in-house seems more straightforward for general commercial lit or more standard transactional practices. Any tips for someone who’s practice is a bit of a hybrid (and who will never likely do discovery or handle a depo)

Thoughts on recording meetings. In Texas and have ADHD. I’ve been recording internal meetings for the past couple of weeks and my work product has improved exponentially. I’m able to go back and listen to the directions over again. In law school I had a note that gave me permission to do this. Is this taboo in a firm?

From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…

I have ADD and occasionally make small mistakes in my work, like leaving a word missing when editing sentences, small formatting errors or leaving an internal comment in drafts sent to clients. All partners have been very understanding and care about the quality of my work, and no client has ever complained. Partners and clients praise my work.

But now, one partner has become super mad and when I explained ADD, he said:

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Like is there a perception of us being a step down or ancillary to the big leagues of NYC or not? There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think? Be brutally honest.

Hey gang. If you exited BL or are looking to exit, where did you go and, more importantly, how did you figure out the path? I sometimes feel like career steps after BL for most associates are organic and less deliberate. But I’m lost with where to go next with my career. Entering fourth year PE M&A associate. Ready to leave.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

But actually how do you bill your time? (and don’t say contemporaneously)

Say you spend 2 minutes answering an email to a client earlier in the day and then 3 minutes on another email later in the day. Do you bill 0.1 or 0.2? More importantly, how do you keep track of that throughout the day?
