Well I never look at it that way. I have a few thoughts on this.
1. Free will is very real. We may convince many to try a brand or service, but only a good product can keep that customer. Also, like I work on b2c and b2b clients, no one not in the market for HR software is getting HR software.
2. I grew up right at the poverty line. I now make good money and am able to help my parents with a few hundred dollars a month so they can live in a safe neighborhood and enjoy some small pleasures.
3. I work volunteer my skills for 2 non profits. One serves the homeless and the other is the national association for mental illness. Maybe I make some level of difference there, maybe I'd only. But I try.
So the way I see it, given my skills and aptitude, I was never gonna make it as a surgeon. Not inclined for the cloth. Not a talented chemist. Advertising allows me to help my family in others in ways other jobs may not. Like i was a roofer in college. Could I give back on that wage? No. I'm good at fixing cars. Probably not able to give back much there either except for the occasional free repair.
Perspective changes everything.
I actually do like advertising as I think it's important, but we don't need to consume, we need to give! I'm torn a lot.
You can always look into advertising for Christian ministries and goodwill organizations. Not every career has to be flashy or just to promote more “stuff”. There’s plenty of places that need creativity; just find one that aligns with your values.
