Just to vent... How can a firm that prides itself on professionalism, and great legal services, be so dim on the business level. A firm will terminate good paralegals etc., keep a somewhat unethical attorney because they make "money", and yet waste money in their hiring and firing. Not to mention, do they make money? Or are unpaid balances forgotten? And don't terminate then ask them to not disparage the firm!

So true. Fire, or drive out, good, knowledgeable, long term paralegals and hire beauticians, mall store managers, and fast food workers, then wonder why work isn't getting done or deadlines are missed. Yes, a trained paralegal, especially with experience, costs more, but we know what we are doing.

Or demote like I was.

One of the reasons I love being in house. Firms are run by attorneys, not business people. The characteristics that make you rise to partner do not include business savvy or managerial abilities.

like

Well I’m confused by your description and it’s not my experience. I worked in biglaw where it was as you described. Then I went in house at a start up and saw none of the arrogance you’re describing!

I feel the same way; I always think I have seen it all and then kapowee! Reality sets in. I have about fifteen years of experience, some of it great and some not so great, but I have seen really bright, hard-working paralegals with real ABA-approved certs, be fired or passed over for promos when know-nothings new to the scene replace them. I've worked with some unscrupulous attys and some really awesome ones; ya never know what you're gonna get when you start a new role. I also don't think anyone should be punished for disparaging the firm once you leave; that's our RIGHT and it is often well-justified. Just keep your head down for now and focus on your work. Remember, they couldn't do it without you, and I believe that good paralegals are an asset to any business or in-house firm. Good luck!

like

Just thought of this when you said, "You never know what you're going to get", hey it's like a box of chocolate!

Clearly they don't know what they want or they don't know what they have. It could go both ways. Money talks and the rest walks. Unfortunately in this world, it's always been like that. I suppose they see it as rocking the boat. But granted one day, that unethical attorney will not be tolerated when the firm gets on good solid foundation. Either they are making money or living off loans.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.
