I assume you're discussing net due. Yes, sounds like a mistake. Goto a professional. It'll cost 300-500, but sounds like it will save you a lot.
Did your withholding change? Check your W-2s. If you had the same level of taxes taken out then you definitely need a professional. If you didn’t... this might be the true-up
My income was a little less than you but I hit AMT the last 2 years and taxes were almost identical. I used TurboTax and it does a side by side comparison from 2016 and 2017. You should be able to do a similar comparison to see what changed.
I sincerely doubt you only paid $500 last year. Do you mean you only paid $500 in April last year? How do your withholdings this year compared to last year? It will be much more meaningful to talk about total tax liability and withholding, not just the amount due in April
Do a quick back of the envelope calculation. What is the percentage of ur tax withheld compared to ur taxable income? If it’s below ur expected tax rate, then u probably should pay more this year
You only paid 500 in fed taxes last year? Is this a typo?
Thanks BCG1, good point on withholdings.
Yes, I was referring to net due in April. We used an accountant to prepare the taxes so assumed they already investigated this, but it does look like my husband's employer changed their withholdings between 2016 and 2017.
Did you do any 401k to Roth conversions? That can spike your tax bill.
