I will always advocate for ERISA/employee benefits. Unless you have a neurotic partner (I’ve had a couple of those) it’s probably one of the more relaxed areas. Deadlines usually weeks or months out. It’s very technical and a niche practice, but if you’re new and mention an interest you’ll often be welcomed with open arms. It’ll take you about 4 years to begin to feel competent, but you will eventually be the knowledgeable partner.
You’ll want a firm with several attorneys with a technical practice, not one where it’s primarily seen as a M&A auxiliary. Far fewer in-house jobs because of the niche, but the speciality often pays a bit better, especially for women, because there’s more of us in it. (ERISA was passed in 1974, when women were first entering the practice in large numbers.)
I’ve spent the last 12 years working as counsel for a regional firm. I’m fully remote, and essentially working part-time for very decent pay.
