Let’s add context🔥: List your firm’s levels with titles, in terms of avg years till promotion: ex: Booz Allen = Consultant (Lvl 1) 1-2 yrs, Senior Consultant (Lvl 2) 2-3 yrs, Associate (Lvl 3)....etc

IBM:

Consultant: 1-2 years (more and you should consider your life choices)
Sr Consultant: 3-8 years
Managing Consultant: 4-#REF! years
Associate Partner: #REF!
Partner/VP: outside hire/boomerang

That’s a movie quote

Associate - 2-2.5 years
Associate Consultant - 2-2.5 years
Consultant - 2.5 years
Manager - 4 years
Associaite Principal- no clue
Principal - you made it! 😀

Not accurate, Booz Allen doesn’t have an up or out model. People will work in various capacities and various roles—not everyone wants to manage people or conduct business development activities.

What BAH1 said. I’ve worked with two people, who had been with the firm 15 & 19 years, and they were still Associates because they didn’t want to lead

like

@Bah1 agreed, let’s assume this post is for individuals who desire career acceleration the whole way through. Aka have no kids 😅

I relocated to Huntsville from DC and I will never, ever go back. Love it here! (I did leave Booz, though)

PwC:
Associate (when you start) (<1 year)
Experienced associate: after your first career round table in May (not a promotion, technically): 2-3 years
Senior associate:2-4 years
Manager: 2-4 years
Senior manager: 2-4 years
Director: 3-X years
Managing director / principle / partner: you made it
First number is always the minimum...most take longer

likeuplifting

...specify your functional track (S&O, Tech, Cyber, etc). In the ex above, SC would need 2-3 yrs in that role before promotion to Associate, and so on.....

After principal you’re actually missing VP, SVP (real “partner,” now with stock), and EVP (“officer” in SEC filings)

like

ACN Strat:
Analyst - 1-1.5yrs (one expected)
Sr Analyst - 1-1.5yrs (one expected)
Consultant - 3-4yrs (3 expected, 2 exceptional, 4 happens frequently) OR Sr Consultant - MBA hire only as C3, 2yrs expected, 1 exceptional
Manager - 3yrs (2 exceptional)
Sr Manager - 3-5yrs
MD (Exec)- 2-4yrs
MD (Sr Exec) - 3-6yrs (2 exceptional)
MD (Director) - Retirement
Sr MD - By appointment

I just made associate in a little under 2 yrs in the aerospace defense market. Not sure about the others though.

Love that all these stop at "partner". I would guess most firms have more levels after partner than before

We number our levels. There's different titles in some of the streams, but you get the idea. Some streams and countries also skip some of the even # levels.

13 intern
12 associate
11 analyst
10 senior analyst
9 consultant / team lead
8 associate manager
7 manager
6 senior manager
5 senior principal / associate director
4 managing director
3 managing director
2 senior managing director
1 executive / C-Suite

Hi all,
I’m currently working for a small technical consulting start-up firm. I make good money, have great benefits, and they seem very happy with the work I’m doing, so I know I could move up quickly. However, tech consulting is definitely not my dream job. I want to get into data analytics, and I have an offer from a big company to do just that. I’ve only been at my current company for about 8 months, but I don’t ever see myself loving this job. How do I know when it’s time to make a change?
