Let’s debate: if a firm’s billable requirement is 1900, is it worth it to bill anything over that?

It literally comes down to 1 question: partner or GTFO? If latter, do not bill one second over the minimum it’s just free labor.

This is the most logical well discussed thread I think I have ever seen on social media. Bravo

Blackbox/not Market = NO. lol

Depends. For some firms the minimum is the floor but the expectation is you bill much more. In others, only billing the minimum won’t get you fired but it also won’t get you elected to partner, if that’s your goal.

I’ll play the devil’s advocate here: if your team is busy and they need your help, then you should 100% step up and bill the extra. You’re not getting paid for 1900 hours of work. You’re getting paid for making yourself available and getting shit done for your clients.

I feel differently about this if you’re paid under market AND don’t want to make partner.

like

I’ll devil’s advocate the devil’s advocate: as a biglaw associate you’re getting paid because even at 1900 billables you’re making the partners/firm a lot of $$$. Obviously it would make life difficult for your team (who you hopefully like), but it’s not like associates should feel obligated to bill more than the firm’s minimum threshold merely to “earn their paycheck.”

It depends on your collections and realization rates. If you're billing 1900, but only collecting on 1200 of it, you should probably bill more.

are you a partner?

then I think you know the answer to your question…

I don’t get the question. If you’re at 1900 before year end and there’s work to do, what choice do you have? You can’t just say sorry met my hours not working for the rest of the year…

A2 and A3 totally understand. I think it’s more when asked to be staffed on new cases when I’m already billing 40 hours per week or more and on track or above to hit hours.

Subs! Internal subbing is draining the life out of teachers. The sub schedule comes out at the last minute bc of so many teacher absences. It’s the split classes in one period (1/2 Gen Ed and a Special Ed class) Teachers on a cart. Subs pick up students and deliver students. Class changeovers take 10 minutes bc of the domino effect. We’re all waiting for next sub. Teachers are late for their own classes. Students are in chaos with rotating subs. We pay $100 a day. Is the Solution in plain sight?

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?
