I am an assistant to a rainmaker and my base is $158k in NYC. I have been offered more to switch firms, but I really don't want to learn another person. I also have a BA and an MA but I don't think that's the reason, at all. I think it's because I've always negotiated my salary, strategic job changes early on because of who I work with and a little bit of luck.
Also, they are going to pay you the least amount they can get away with paying--this is a business after all--so be sure to negotiate throughout your career if you find you are under market.
I think it all depends on which market you’re in (area of the country), what area of law you’re assisting in, if you’re at a big firm or small firm, and what your experience is and capabilities and responsibilities are. Some legal assistants do a lot and are capable of doing a lot of tasks, drafting, etc. Some are not. And some attorneys use them for more secretarial tasks or personal assistants versus more legal oriented and drafting etc., so all of those things factor into the comp base.
I’m in the Phoenix market and I can tell you you it’s a big range based on all of the factors above, so I’ve seen Legal Assistant salaries from $65K-95K in my same semi-big law firm and have heard that range to be consistent among other Phoenix-area large firms. Of course benefits are in addition to that and at my firm, if you are also doing billable work, at least in the litigation or corporate department, there’s a 10% bonus pay of collectibles. But on the personal injury side at my firm, those assistants that work in that department may receive a different kind of bonus based on a case payout. So it really depends.
But I would imagine that in NYC, this range would be low, so highly dependent on those factors.
