He has won at every level (karting and the junior series) in equal machinery... c'mon man, there are probably 6 drivers on the grid that can win a WDC in the right car right now (Leclerc, Max, Lewis, Alonso, Gasly, Norris) and feel free to debate more. They are literally the best drivers in the world and given the right car, can win. I don't buy the above average take - those top guys are literally the Top 5-10 best drivers in the world
I’d add russel and vettel to the list but otherwise agree, Hamilton is clearly still getting the maximum out of the car
Hamilton is a fantastic driver and his record against his team mates plus his consistent run over many years proves it. His stats were miles better than his team mates apart for one year and he rarely makes mistakes. I don’t think he’s the knife fighter that some of the younger drivers are, but he’s very quick and almost error free.
F1 is always about the best driver in the best car. Vettle was that before the hybrid era.
I think there’s an extra level elite drivers have when they believe they have a chance to really outperform the car. We’ve seen it recently with Russell at Williams and we saw it with Alonso his last couple years at Ferrari. Lewis did that for the better part of a decade and Vettle managed it for 4 years.
Maybe Lewis is a bit off at the moment. New car and likely not in the hunt for a championship could lead to a bit of a release for him.
I’m glad Merc and Hamilton aren’t driving away with this. I’m not the biggest fan of them; but I can’t deny we’ve seen greatness from him and the team for several years.
I think some people like being contrarians for no reason. A great player on a great team is always discounted. They did that with Brady until he went and won one in TB.
I think a clear sign of a good driver is when you win WDC but not constructors. Lewis did it in 2008 but most of his Merc wins were more attributable to the car. He’s not the best driver on the field right now.
