Looking back, some of my career moves were intentional… others just happened because the opportunity was there.
I’m starting to question how much I’ve designed vs. reacted.
Has your path felt intentional or mostly reactive to opportunities?

Reactive. I got my degree, started applying and never really looked back or stopped to think about some predetermined career path. It's worked out well enough for me.

👍

I've made the best of the opportunities I got. It's worked out pretty well.

I think a lot of people, especially in technology, fall into the trap of the dream job. They might be dead set on game design, for example, and pass up a fantastic opportunity because it isn't in game design, and then spin their wheels to nowhere. I see so many people seeking how to get from brand new to some very specific specialization.

It's just so hard to take a straight path to any specialization in technology because often the intermediate steps to get there don't look like they're headed in the right direction.

like

Yep, agree

There was no master plan, and I'm fine with that. Some career turns for me were honestly the result of good fortune and chance meetings. Like the brilliant old song lyric, "The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense, Take what you have gathered from coincidence."

like

Cool. I don't think I am familiar with that song but happy it has worked out for you

Most of my moves ended up happening because I got tired and wanted a new beginning and to start things from scratch.

like

I feel like that motivated my latest company move as well

Reactive sadly

You shouldn't feel sad about if it has worked out for you

like

Right now I feell like I’m just waiting for something to happen but nothing does. I need to be more intentional.

Yes, be the driver not the passenger

👍

I think most careers are a blend. We like to believe they are designed, but many pivotal moves come from opportunity timing. Reflection is useful, but reacting well is also a skill, not a failure of planning.

Great points!

I plan. God laughs.

Hello Everyone,

I have been working with Kantar (a market research company) for 10 months now. The company has given me permanent work from home. Work is quite good and I am able to learn many things here. Also, my manager is very supportive and patient.
The only thing is about compensation, I have a package of 14 lpa with 6 YOE.
I'm thinking of switching to some company based in Pune.
What should I do?

First time poster here!

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

Hi Everyone, I am trying to apply for a Technical Support role at Dropbox I’m entering all the required fields but there seems to be an issue, when I hit submit after filling the form, it doesn’t submit and throws error ‘Looks like you left this blank! Please fill out this required field’ when all the fields are entered already (I have checked so many times, and filled the form from scratch several times too). Anyone from Dropbox who can put me in touch with HR or suggest what I should do next?

What are some red flags you've noticed in the hiring process? I've finally landed an interview after weeks of applying. I think it went well on my end, but something about the managers I spoke with just feels...off.

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?
