Depends on your practice. For core transactional, that likely won’t get you promoted since people gunning for at least counsel usually bill like 2300-2700. I don’t think specialists need to bill that much, but ymmv.
Latham has some tough personalities and very little room for error. Even if you don’t get a screamer, you’ll likely meet a high level of passive aggression.
Not at Latham, but I feel like there are a plenty of v50 funds shops that are better than Latham? Like debevoise, ropes even fried frank?
Can confirm Latham is toxic af. 2000-2100 won’t get you promoted to counsel/partner, but you shouldn’t get in trouble for low hours or anything. *FYI*, Latham’s hours requirement to get a bonus is 1900, but if you want to get the top “adjective” for promotion / bonus calculation purposes, you need at least 2100 hours (and billing 2100 hours is necessary but not sufficient). I would make sure you get the deets on that from your recruiting contacts because it is quite nebulous.
Yeah, not really sure where all the Latham is toxic posts are coming from. Maybe a few random groups are but when I was there, I was surprised at how much of an obsession there was to culture with very little tolerance for toxic partners. They even have upward reviews that they take seriously and take action against partners that get poor reviews from associates.
I was always at around 1900 and nobody ever mentioned any concerns (though, I was a specialist). At every firm event, all the associates I spoke with said their groups were equally chill from a culture perspective. Statistically, agreed that the numbers being thrown around here align with respect to the subset of people gunning for promotion but it definitely seemed much more self-motivated, rather than direct sweatshop pressure/toxicity.
Statistics also vary widely depending on what group you are in and they are probably the most transparent of any firm on the progression process and where you stand.
All in all, it had the same vibes as the V50 I lateraled from and certainly nowhere near the toxicity of others like Kirkland.
Just an anecdotal counterpoint. I found it was way harder to hit hours at v100 than v5. At my v100, clients seemed more sensitive to the bills and that pressure came down on us as associates. Don’t bill for this, don’t bill for that. Only 1 associate per client call.
Did not have this at all at my v5. I felt like the workload was the same at both and my hours at v100 averaged 2200 and my hours at v5 averaged 2450. Shrug.
