That Friday feeling...
Abu and Rajah.

My resume got shortlisted for Operations Associate/Engineer-Amazon Managed Services role. I am an experienced AWS engineer with 5YOE.I feel like this role will be degrading in nature for me. Is it worth joining for this position. I would love to join Amazon based on my experience and skill set. But Not to some position which doesn't require AWS experience.

I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?

I feel like this could just be a downsize play and they’re using the angry client and “recoupment” as justification since their deal pipeline is weak. If they have work they’re not just going to slash an attorney…. So odd.

This bowl is full of people who tend to think any conspiracy is more likely that what the actual evidence says so people not "liking" my post means nothing. You could be right but honestly do you think this is about $50k in severance or something or someone being furious over $500k or more in lost billings and potentially losing a client? I don't think this is secretly about the firm trying to save money because they were already planning to downsize, I think someone screwed up and a partner over reacted.
Shouldn’t senior associates and/or partners be checking your work lol That’s a crazy way to handle the mistake - I’m sorry this happened to you.
In a perfect world there would be a second (at least) set of eyes on everything, but unfortunately there’s rarely the time/capacity.
Nothing to add but sympathy here — I’m sorry, that sounds like an awful situation.

You can ask. Weird way to handle this situation.

This is an insane way for the partner (and firm) to handle this situation. Makes sense not to charge the client for fixing the problem but eating costs of mistakes is part of the business.

This is odd. Are you sure you’re being fired?

It’s always standard because they want the liability waivers. They may be fine without them if they think they have a well-documented cause to terminate you. If you have a friendly partner you might be able to check with them to see if they have any insight. Otherwise it’s pretty opaque, this is fairly abnormal in this field. Again, really sorry.
Dude I’m sorry - this sucks and is not a normal way for them to react. You should definitely name and shame.

It sounds like you’re being scapegoated. It’s the partner’s responsibility to make sure the work is correct. The partner probably threw you under the bus when explaining the issue to the client.
I agree with the comment above that it’s also likely an excuse to downsize headcount when there’s less work coming in.
Mistakes happen all the time and write offs are common. The deal still closed. It’s not like you gave wrong legal advice that ended up costing the client millions.

This seems wayyyyyyyyy more grizzly and cut throat than I’ve ever seen/heard of. Why the aggression? I made a similar issue at my firm (V10 NY)

Wow this partner is WILD. I’m seriously upset for you. I’m like agitated. Wow

This doesn’t sound like big law.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Doesn’t seem like the sort of thing a real NY firm would pull (even in this market) - so guessing one of Jones Day, White & Case, Paul Hastings, O’Melveny, maybe Cooley.
Does an individual partner really have authority to single handedly fire someone like this? Is it possible he is going a bit rogue here, not speaking on behalf of the firm, and hoping you’ll just leave without making a scene?
I have no idea if that’s allowed. I’m going to ask for a separation agreement since that seems standard

This is insane. These types of things happen more often than you think. Sorry. But, it sounds like your departure is for the best — you’ll find a better place to work.
Does this happen, someone makes a mistake and they get fired for one mistake?
OP, any update?

What the fuck.

+1 for the separation agreement and severance, because it’s not just the liability waivers they want, in this case they’ll definitely want a non-disparagement because this is FUCKING CRAZY and they will not want you to name and shame
Is 3 months severance standard? Sorry you’re going through this though
