Dunno how I feel about this.
What about when I’m working nights and weekends to get things done, but need to take off a couple hours mid-day to deal with something at my kids school, or pickup/dropoff, or block off time for whiteboarding, or am in the office talking at the water cooler, or taking a short walk to mull over a problem?
Activity metrics are just so coarse and ripe for abuse.
Agree with OP. But also what about charging clients obscene prices for services? Isn't that a form of fraud? It's maddening especially when us as consultants are paid peanuts compared to our hourly rates.

Managers who focus on inputs (e.g., time at desk, appearing green on Teams) are typically poor leaders. As long as stuff is getting done and people are communicative, there should be no need for mouse jigglers or any of that nonsense.
You nailed it. 100% agree. Lead and not micromanage your team. Earn trust through intentional relationships and not title alone. You will find your team is willing to do anything for the success of each other. If they don’t the team will help them improve or chase them off. I lead a team and I work for them not the other way around. My job is to keep crap out of their way so they can work. I do that and they trust me. They trust me and the whole team wins. Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey is worth the read for some of these ‘leaders’.
