Plaza Midwood is great
Personally, I’d stay away from Uptown. Ever since COVID hit, it’s kind of “fallen off”, never very much going on (unless it’s a sporting event), lots of homeless people and less fun bars.
They have high rises, but not to sound cheesy, that’s not really the vibe you want coming in to Charlotte. Charlotte has the city atmosphere but on a MUCH smaller scale. I’d look for a cute neighborhood such as South End, Dilworth, Sedgefield, LoSo, NoDa or Plaza Midwood. If you’re set on the high rise vibe, you can find it, but I think Charlotte is more about the vibrant neighborhoods.
Agree this is the best take here.
Welcome to Charlotte, OP!
There are only two areas with what you are describing
1. South end - the highest % of shops and restaurants with mostly low rises but a couple mid to high rises that have recently been built and are very nice
2. Uptown - downtown Charlotte that definitely has lots of your classic “high rises” good amount of restaurants too
Depending on your work location at University, you can live along light rail in South End or Uptown and avoid traffic altogether.
I think I'll be in the minority here, but I live in uptown and can't stand south end. I work uptown, so my commute is a whopping 5 minute walk. I love going to the various art performances at the Blumenthal, the museums, the parks, farmers market, and any of the events they do at the ball park in the off season (ice skating!!!). There's also all of the sports games so if you're into football, soccer, baseball, or basketball there's something for you. Spectrum center also doubles as an event venue for bigger artists and that's nice to. Walkable to the light rail so if you do ever want to explore South end, it's super easy and convenient to do so. South end is younger, but I feel like all there is to do is drink and walk on the rail trail. I was never into that. Yes there are homeless people uptown and also right now the street takeovers are a pain.
My only advice no matter where you end up would be to try and find a place to rent privately. Apartment complexes are just crappy in general and will charge you unreasonable $s. Rent fluctuates less with a private owner and allows you to save more for whatever else you want to do.
I feel the same way. I lived at The Vue for 3 years. Best years of my life. I had so much fun.
Walking distance to every live sports event, theater, shows, bars and restaurants. Kids of love music. And I made a lot of friends in the building so they were plenty of fun seems at the pool with beverages. Great times.
I can give you a referral to an uptown apartment complex. Sometimes you’ll get a discount with the referral
Please don’t. I live in the building next door. Living in uptown blows
500 W Trade in Uptown. There really aren’t any high rises in Southend
Might be worth looking in Noda as well. Won’t have as many restaurants and shops walking distance as sound end or uptown but would still be safe and walkable and a lot of young professionals. It would have you north of uptown so the commute will be a bit better, also has a light rail stop nearby that you could take to UNCC area (though maybe not close enough to your office) or to go hang out in uptown, south end, etc. when you want.
I currently live in Charlotte and I moved from DC area. I have visited most apartments in Uptown/SE. I’ll say where you want to live depends on your demographics.
If you are in your 20s. I’ll recommend Southend as it’s more vibrant. It has most of the restaurants, night life etc. Most apartments in that area are fairly new like 2018. Depending on where you live, you can walk to work or jump on the train. SE is relatively close to uptown (downtown) if your office is located there
If you are in your 30s and want something really walking distance to work and is proximity to everything I’ll say uptown. This is where most high rises are located. My advice with CLT is don’t live in a building older than 2018.
I’m moving from my apartment in uptown to Southend in mid July. Let me know if you need help with anything (apartments recommendations, questions etc)
I live next to uptown 550 and there’s lots of homeless folks that try to sleep in the stairwells and under any sort of cover the building might offer.
Ascent, 500 W Trade, Catalyst, Bell Uptown, Vue, Circa Uptown is really nice as well but not a high rise.
Currently in uptown and spend all of my time Ubering or driving to south end, noda, plaza, and dillworth etc. There’s not a ton of stuff going on outside of sports games. There’s a handful of great restaurants but that’s it. Not really the walkable city scape you’d imagine. Kinda busy on weekdays during the day but empties on weekends.
I liked the Ashton when I lived there (south end). I know a lot of traders have lived in the Vue and liked it (uptown).
South end is a great spot! Tons of shops, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops! Plus you can take the light rail into uptown if you need to commute into an office every day and your office is in uptown!
What’s your budget range and size of apartment? You are looking at starting around $2k in South End and it can go up from there.
You should find something in south end for that. There aren’t too many high rises but you will find a lot of mid rises close to the rail trail in that range.
South end or south park
I’m in skyhouse….. management sucks but other than that, no one bothers me.
