MD native who lives in DC here -- threshold question: do you have children? a spouse to consider? As others have said, I would not want to drive that commute on a regular basis. In my experience, you'll spend 90 minutes both ways. And DC traffic can get tragically screwed by one accident on the beltway or 95, or snow, or rain, or a baseball game, or or or . . . . I haven't done the train on a regular basis, but I know it's not cheap. Is it an option to work out of the GS office in DC on occasion? Finally, Columbia and Laurel are suburban blah. If you decide to give up on the DC idea (and Cap Hill is the best option on your list), I would try downtown baltimore or somewhere like Catonsville/Ellicott City if you absolutely don't want to be in downtown baltimore. GL!
Yea also considering Amtrak, going to try out both initially. Amtrak seems a little pricier for monthly pass vs marc (300 vs 240) but quicker n more comfortable. 60 bucks difference is immaterial for this imo
That commute is rough would not recommend. I lived in Baltimore for 6 years and it’s a great city you just have to find the right neighborhood for you
Why do you want to live in DC to work in Bmore?
Like DC a lot and not much desire to move to baltimore.
This seems like a bad idea. I would consider a one month sublet in bmore or something. It doesn't get a fair shake (I live in DC but spent considerable time in bmore). You get a lot more bang for the buck for sure
^this is driving looks like.. and ~1.5 hours on train?
Also, in general, I know Baltimore has a bad reputation, but I’ve lived in NYC, Shanghai, chicago, Boston, Amsterdam, and St Pete FL and enjoy Baltimore all the same. It’s not the hairy ass crack of the nation people like to paint it as, I swear!
H street baby!
Phewwww what a commute. 🥵People do it though, but I bet that would get old FAST. The Marc train from DC to Baltimore runs out of Union Station, which is located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Are you driving to Baltimore m-f?
3 days a week max I believe
3 days a week expected. Looks like 45-50 minutes there maybe a hour coming back? Is that about right? Sorry but don’t have much desire to move to baltimore but have always liked DC a lot
Hard position. I did Baltimore to DC for a while. I used the train from Penn to Union Station. It gets tiring after a while. I would scratch the idea of driving unless you are being paid to sit in unbearable traffic daily, 2x/day. I get not wanting to be in Baltimore as I'm finally making the move to the DC area. Depending on lifestyle, you should look at downtown, Canton, Fed Hill etc. It's not DC but also not Baltimore. Good luck!
Um. Don't live in DC and work in Baltimore... Like why pay three times the cost of living to commute for almost two hours?
Check out Columbia, Laurel, etc.
Cost isn’t an issue, I like DC a lot and not interested in suburb life. Train looking like not a terrible option
