Upper west side condos in the Central Park area should work well for you. 15 mins commute with the express train lines or 20 mins with a taxi.
Jersey City and Hoboken are great. Your money goes further and you don’t have to pay NYC tax! I lived in JC for a year and it was so accessible to the city but felt more suburban without the commute.

Princeton area has its upsides. About 60 minute NJ Transit train ride commute from there to NYC Penn Station.
Astoria (Queens) is a pretty nice spot and relatively more affordable.
If you want to be even further, Bayside / Forest Hills are both really nice areas with <45 min commute there but you might feel you need a car
The harder thing about working in NYC is getting away from city living!
Try Bushwick or Ridgewood..
NJ towns along Hudson River: Fort Lee, Edgewater, Weehawken. They have access to bus to Port Authority as well as ferry which is very fast and pleasant.
